Jabalpur Trip

Madhya Pradesh

Bhedaghat:

A town in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India, situated on the banks of Narmada River. It is best known for marbel rocks & Dhuandhar Falls.

Jabalpur:

Previously called Jubbulpore, it is a city, on the banks of Narmada River, in Madhya Pradesh, India. Some say that Jabalpur was named after a sage, named Jabali, who meditated on the banks of Narmada River. Some say that the name originated from an Arabic word, Jabal, which means granite or huge boulders, which were common in the region.

Other than Dhuandhar Falls, Jabalpur is famous for Bargi Dam, Madan Mahal & Balancing Rock.

Dhuandhar Falls:

The word Dhuandhar is derived from 2 Hindi words: Dhuan (smoke) & Dhar (flow). Narmada River, in Bhedaghat, flows through the marble rocks and plunges into this waterfall, creating a huge roar, which can be heard from a far distance. This plunge creates a huge mass of mist, which appears as a smoke.

Bargi is a town in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India.

Bargi Dam:

Also known as Rani Avanti Bai Sagar Dam. It is one of the 30 major dams on Narmada River, with around 21 gates, and a major provider of hydroelectricity and water for irrigation and drinking to Jabalpur & other surrounding places. The construction is said to be started in 1974 and completed in 1990

MPT Maikal Resort, in Bargi, provides good water activities, along with cruises & speed-boats, on Bargi Dam reservoir water.

Balancing Rock:

It is a big almost oval shaped rock, balanced on a small base rock, which is said to be formed millions of years ago by some volcanic activities. Situated near Madan Mahal, it is famous as a natural wonder in Jabalpur, acting against the earth’s gravitational force, remaining stable even in earthquakes & erosions.

Madan Mahal:

Also known as Rani Durgawati Fort. It is a 11th century fort, which was built by Raja Madan Singh, who is said to be the 37th Gond ruler.  The fort is associated with Rani Durgavati, who was the queen regent of Gondwana from 1550 – 1564.

Rani Durgavati:

Born: 5th October, 1524
Father: Shalbaham (Chandela Rajput king of Mahoba Kingdom)
Husband: Dalpat Shah (eldest son of Sangram Shah, who was 48th king of Garha Kingdom)
Son: Vir Narayan

Sangram Shah (1488 – 1541)
Dalpat Shah (1541 – 1550)

Vir Narayan was just 5 years old, when Dalpat Shah died. Due to the minority of her son, Durgavati became the regent. There after, taking the control & comand of the throne, she became Rani Durgavati.

Rani Durgavati (1550 – 1564)

During her rule, she moved her capital from Singorgarh Fort to Chauragarh Fort.

Singorgarh Fort is a hill-fort and situated in Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh. Chauragarh Fort (Chougan Fort) is situated on the peak of the Satpura Range, in Narsinghpur district of Madhya Pradesh, India.

During her rule, Buz Bahadur (last ruler of Malwa Sultanate) tried to invade Gondwana, but, his invasion was repulsed by the strong forces of Rani Durgavati.

In 1562, Akbar (Mughal Emperor) conquered Malwa and took it under Mughal dominion.

Battle of Narrai:

Consequently, Akbar sent Asaf Khan (Mughal General) to fight against Rani Durgavati. To fight a defensive battle, Rani Durgavati went to Narai Nala, which is a valley in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, situated between a hilly range, on one side, and 2 rivers, Gaur River & Narmada River, on the other side. But, it was an unequal battle between the trained & organized forces of the Mughals and untrained soldiers with older weapons of Rani Durgavati. Even Vir Narayan took part in the battle and tried to push back the Mughals. But, he was injured and had to retire to a safe place. During the battle, Rani Durgavati was badly injured near her ear with an arrow. Another arrow pierced her neck and she fell unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she found out that she was on the verge of defeat. It is said that her mahout asked her to leave the battlefield for her safety. But, refusing to surrender to the Mughals, Rani Durgavati took out her dagger and stabbed herself to death. This sacrifice took place on 24th June, 1564, leading to the Mughal victory.

Today, 24th June, 1564 is commemorated as Balidan Diwas. Even University of Jabalpur, which is a government university in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, is named as Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya or Rani Durgavati University. It was eshtablished on 12th June, 1956.

Malwa Resort

Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

Malwa Resort:

It is under Madhya Pradesh Tourism, situated near Sagar Lake, in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh.

Visiting Places:

The documents are abbreviated from the documentries of Malwa Resort

Inspired by the great mosque of Damascus, the Jami Masjid, was convinced on a grand scale with a high plinth and a huge domed porchprojecting in the center, the background dominated by similar imposing domes with the intervening space filled by innumerable domes. One is stuck by the hugeness of the building’s proportions and the mosque is enclosed on all sides by huge colonnades with a rich & pleasing variety in the arrangement of arches, pillars & number of bays.

This 120m long Ship Palace built between the 2 artificial lakes, Munj Talao & Kapur Talao, is a elegant 2 storyed parace. Probably, it was built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji for his large harem. With its open pavilions, balconies overhanging the water and open terrace, Jahaj Mahal is an imaginative recreation in stone of a royal pleasure craft.

Speciality: Light & Sound

The pavilion was originally built as an army observation post. From its hilltop perch, this gracefull structure with its 2 pavilions was a retreat of the lovely queen, from where she could see Baz Bahadur’s palace & Narmada River flowing through the Nimar Plains far below.

Mandu is a celebration in stone of life & joy, of the love of the poet-prince, Baz Bahadur, and his consort, Rani Roopmati. The balladeers of Malva still sing of the romance of these royal lovers and high up on the crest of a hill, Roopmati’s Pavilion still gazes down at Baz Bahadur’s palace. A magnificient expression of Afghan Architecture.
Perched along the Vindhya Ranges, at an altitude of 2,000ft, Mandu, with it’s natural defences, was originally the fort-capital of the Parmar rulers of Malwa. Towards the end of 13th century, it came under the sway of the sultans of Malwa.
It is said that, Baz Bahadur (Bayazid Baz Bahadur Khan) was the son & successor of Shuja’at Khan. He ruled from 1555 – 1562.
