Ahilya Bai (also spelled as Ahilyabai Holkar) was born in a Marathi Hindu family, on 31st May, 1725. It is said that she had 5 brothers. She married Khande Rao Holkar, in 1738, when she was approximately 13 years old. Male Rao Holkar was born in 1745 and Mukta Bai Holkar was born in 1748.

On 24th March, 1754, Khande Rao Holkar was treachously killed by the Jatt, in the Battle of Kumher (located in Deeg discrict of Rajasthan, India), which was faught between the Kingdom of Bharatpur, led by Maharaja Suraj Mal, and the Mughal Emperor Alamgir II, supported by his allies (including the Marathas). Some say that he was lured by a nautch girl, whereas, others say that he was killed by a cannon-ball (fired by the Jatt artillery), when Khande Rao Holkar was inspecting his troops.

After the sudden death of Khande Rao Holkar, Ahilya Bai Holkar wanted to perform Sati (a ritual where the widow throw herself in the pyre of her dead husband). But, since Malhar Rao Holkar had no more successors left and Holkar dynasty may get shattered with the death of Ahilya Bai Holkar, he asked her not to perform Sati. Thus, Ahilya Bai Holkar became Maharani Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, who devoted her whole life to Lord Shiva.

The Gods came out victorious in the battle against the demon army and Mani was killed. It is said that, while dying, Mani offered a white horse to Khandoba as a show of repentance with exchange of a boon to be present in everyone of his shrines with the offering of a goat flesh as a sacrifice, ensuring his continued warship. But, Malla asked for a different boon, that is the destruction of the world and human-flesh, which brought a rage in Khandoba and made him to behead Malla.
