It is situated on the eastern bank of Bhagirathi River (a distributary of the Ganges) and named after it’s founder, Nawab Murshid Quli Khan (the first Nawab of Bengal), who shifted the capital of Bengal from Dhaka to Murshidabad. At that time, Bengal was a huge province, consisting of present day Bangladesh, and Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, pasrts of Chhattisgarh, Orissa & Assam.

Murshidabad remained the capital of Bengal till 1773, when Warren Hastings (Governor General of Bengal at that time) shifted the capital to Calcutta (present day Kolkata).
